Skin Cancer Screening and Treatment

Skin cancer is a common condition caused by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal skin cells. Early detection and treatment are crucial to prevent the spread of cancerous cells. At White Pebble Dermatology practice, we offer a variety of skin cancer treatments to help our patients achieve clear, healthy skin.

Types of Skin Cancer

There are three main types of skin cancer:

  1. Basal cell carcinoma - This is the most common type of skin cancer, and it usually develops in areas of the skin that have been exposed to the sun. Basal cell carcinoma typically appears as a waxy bump or a flesh-colored patch that may bleed or develop a crust.
  2. Squamous cell carcinoma - This type of skin cancer usually develops in areas of the skin that have been exposed to the sun, such as the face, ears, and hands. Squamous cell carcinoma appears as a red, scaly patch or a firm, raised bump that may develop a central ulcer.
  3. Melanoma - This is the most dangerous type of skin cancer, and it can spread quickly to other parts of the body. Melanoma typically appears as a dark brown or black mole with irregular borders and uneven coloring.

Skin Cancer Treatment Options

There are a wide range of effective skin cancer treatments, including:

  1. Mohs surgery - This is a specialized surgical procedure used to remove skin cancer. During the procedure, the cancerous tissue is removed one layer at a time and examined under a microscope until no cancer cells are present. This ensures that all cancer cells are removed while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.
  2. Excisional surgery - This is a surgical procedure used to remove the cancerous tissue along with some of the surrounding healthy tissue. The removed tissue is then sent to a lab for analysis to determine if any cancer cells remain.
  3. Radiation therapy - This treatment involves using high-energy radiation to kill cancer cells. It is often used in conjunction with other treatments or when surgery is not an option.
  4. Topical chemotherapy - This treatment involves applying a chemotherapy cream or lotion directly to the skin to kill cancer cells.
  5. Cryotherapy - This treatment involves freezing the cancerous tissue with liquid nitrogen, which destroys the cancer cells.

Our dermatology specialists will work closely with you to determine the best treatment approach based on your specific needs and the type and stage of your skin cancer. We will also provide guidance on how to protect your skin and prevent the development of new skin cancers in the future.
